Prior to World War II, Atlantic City, New Jersey was a seaside resort, attracting visitors from Philadelphia and New York. That all changed December 7, 1941. The federal government commandeered the venerable Convention Hall and hotels and converted them for military use. At the same time, German U-boats lurked just off the coast, unmolested, ravaging commercial shipping.
