Although the construction of a highway across the Everglades in the mid-1920s is still celebrated as a miracle of modern engineering, the devastating effects this edifice would have on both the ecosystems of the Everglades and the culture of the region’s indigenous people is often overlooked. This day-before-Earth-Day presentation by Thomas Lockyear will explore the unfortunate effects of the road’s creation as well as the long history of schemes to drain the Everglades and recent efforts to reverse the damage done.
